Dream Garage?

Okay, it is time for lunch finally so I feel like posing this question to you Oppos about your dream garage. Here are the rules:

Pick four cars.

They must vary as wildly as possible to serve different purposes or what have you. (most variety wins!)

You are stuck with only these cars for life. You can modify them to your heart’s content though(within your own mechanical ability).

No budget limitation but you are going to have to maintain them yourself.

My choices will include:

Kinja'd!!!

E39 M5 for the purpose of road tripping and probably some daily driving, preferably in blue.

Kinja'd!!!

Porsche Cayman GT4 for the purpose of a track car, preferably in yellow.

Kinja'd!!!

FD Rx7 for the purpose of canyon carving/fun street driving and bringing to car meets, preferably in red

Kinja'd!!!

Unsure what vintage but a 4WD Taco for the purpose of being a tow vehicle for my race car, an offroad/camping vehicle, and something to take skiing as well. I would probably want a newer one in crew cab guise and have some sort of modified bed cabin thing, could care less what color as I will be abusing it lol.

This is my list that I just came up with without too much thought into the implications of it. I would probably modify the Porsche and Taco extensively but keep things to a minimum with the m5  and rx7. There are probably more options to vary things up but this takes care of most things I could ever want to do.

I could have spread my choices a little more, but you may note every one of these is as easy as hell to work on except (maybe) the Jerg- I took that point to heart. I could have populated with more German or Japanese, but German is hit and miss with me and I don’t have many Japanese things that captivate me. Also, very much a fungible list - the sorts of elements in the list are steady in kind, but variable in proportion and mix. Another list might include an XJS or a BMW clownshoe with a more modern performance truck, or mix the classics budget up with a ‘49 Packard.

These four, though? Fit the list, all different, and I absolutely could live with them.

But seriously, I’ve been trying to figure out what the fourth Golf would be. I’ve got the MKVI TDI, I’m keeping one MKVII e-Golf; I want a MKVII R. So what is my fourth Golf? It has to be made in Germany, and preferably be newer. I suppose I could look into importing a Golf estate, probably a MKVII if we’re being even remotely realistic.

This is hard.

The SMG is actually a hell of a lot of fun. I'm not a fan of BMW's clutch so I'd be inclined to get an SMG, but considering it will absolutely fail, and a new one is $5,000, it's hard to justify.

If you got a CSL just to track, or you only put a few thousand miles on it a year it would be fine. And if I didn't want a Golf R more than an E46 M3 then I would probably get an SMG because they're almost all low miles and taken care of vs the manuals which are super high miles and beat to shit.

Damn, that’s a really good point on the gearboxes. I n my imaginary setup, the Porsche would be daily, the VW would be weekend, CSL would be C&C toy and the trailblazer would, ahem, blaze trails.

So in this hypothetical setup where I can purchase said cars, the SMG would be ultimately OK.

Yup. But you’re contractually obligated to get the Porsche and VW with a manual.

I laugh when people bitch about the weight of the clutch in the 911. It's not like it was meant to be a DD you sit in traffic with. It's meant to be driven through corners and row through the gears.

This was actually very, very hard for me. I had to think about what cars I would have to keep running for possibly 50 years. Had to go for extreme reliability for my dailies, and decent repair costs for stuff when they do break, along with still having a little fun. I was hoping to get around the wording by leasing vehicle or adding motorcycles but instead I will not count the motorcycles here while assuming I do have them.

1. Daily Driver: 1997 Lexus LS 400, I would immediately do the suggested Jalopnik mods to ensure long term reliability. Always wanted one of theses babies anyways. Unfortunately there is no way I can justify adding a Phaeton to this list.

Kinja'd!!!

2. Truck: In m y opinion it doesn’t get any better than a Cummins s quare- body dodge from the 80s or 90s. Things will break on it but, I always know I can fix it, and I’ll know I can alway find parts. The biggest problem would be preventing it from rusting away into nothing.

Kinja'd!!!

3. Fun car / drive to work in summer: Porsche 964 w idebody, even if money was no option, I think this is the sports car you could for your whole life and never get tired of. Now if I can convince someone to let me drive one to confirm my feelings.

Kinja'd!!!

4. People mover/backup winter daily/ hypothetical child and spouse mover: Current Gen Toyota Sienna. Hopefully very reliable, very safe, comfortable, and able to move people and stuff in all weather with decent mpg. Just about the perfect all rounder. (It was a close race between this and and the Koenigsegg Regera to round out the list)

I think I would have went with the Koenigsegg. Life is too short to own boring cars! I could be entertained with a van, but it would definitely be one that has been highly tricked out into an offroad camper vehicle. I like the ideas you had, it is the most realistic answer for sure. Especially with supplemental motorcycles and rentals, this could be a well rounded list.

Yeah, I’m still not sure it’s the perfect list. Th e fourth vehicle is tripping me up. I also like the ideas of swapping the LS400 for an ES330 because FWD in winter is much easier.
